Prof. Monika Schleier-Smith give a talk on "Quantum Engineering with Cold Atoms and Light" November 21, noon to 1pm, PAB 232.Abstract:Modern atomic physics encompasses a breadth of research benefiting from the ability to realize in the laboratory model quantum systems composed of identical atoms isolated in vacuum and cooled to ultralow temperature.  Between precision spectroscopy, quantum information processing, and the study of interacting many-body quantum systems lies the nascent field of quantum metrology, the enhancement of precision measurements by entanglement.  I will describe past work and new prospects in generating metrologically relevant many-particle entangled states by engineering non-local, light-mediated interactions among atoms in an optical cavity. Lunch will be provided to undergraduates who RSVP to Elva (elva [at] stanford.edu (elva[at]stanford[dot]edu)) before Tuesday, November 19.
