Research Opportunities Outside Stanford

Last Update: November 16, 2024

Many summer research programs and internships have application deadlines in January and February. Therefore, it is a good idea to take some time in December and January to identify programs in which you might be interested and check out the application deadlines so that you don't miss an interesting opportunity. Many of the programs require letters of recommendation; these should be requested from letter writers at least three weeks in advance of the deadline.

The schedules for some programs are optimized for the semester system and may be incompatible with the quarter system, while others accommodate the quarter system. However, for programs that start prior to the end of Spring Quarter, it is often possible to arrange a later start. Check the relevant web pages for details and contact information.

Note that many programs require that students be in their Sophomore or Junior year when they apply. Some positions require US citizenship or permanent residency. Check each program for detailed requirements.

Summer research programs typically provide a stipend of $6000-$7000 for a ten-week program if room/board are not covered by the program, and less if housing is provided.

For information on Stanford's program for our own undergraduates, go to

  • Compilation of summer research opportunities by Pathways to Science (Institute for Broadening Participation, with the goal increasing diversity in STEM fields):
  • Try out this search tool for physics and astronomy undergraduates:
  • American Physical Society (APS) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Summer Workshops -- there are links to videos of past workshops, panels, etc. on this website:
  • Search "summer research physics" or "summer research engineering" or "summer internships physics" in google to find more opportunities.
  • Consider internships and co-ops in industry. Just google ‘summer internship’ and the name of the company (e.g., Tesla, General Electric, etc.).
  • APS webinar that shares advice and resources for finding and successfully applying to research opportunities for undergraduate (REU) programs:
