Teaching Assistantships General Info
Welcome to teaching in the Physics department! Here you’ll find the information you need to know to work as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for us. Please read through the entire webpage before applying to TA.
The physics department offers both 25% and 50% TA positions in Fall, Winter, and Spring quarter, as well as very limited 25% positions in summer quarter. We prioritize hiring physics PhD students, but also will hire graduate students outside the department with a strong background in physics as well as prior teaching experience as needed to cover all our positions.
Course Assistant (CA) positions are offered for graduate classes only. CAs grade and hold office hours but do not teach classes or sections.
Classes with large numbers of TAs will have a Head TA. The head TA is responsible for managing the TAs activities and assisting the professor for keeping the course organized.
AY 2026-2027 Info
- For this year, first-year Physics PhD students will be assigned a quarter in which they have to TA. Make sure to plan when you take Physics 294 so you will be able to TA in the quarter you are assigned to.
- Due to reduced staffing levels this year, Physics PhD students who need funding should make sure to apply Fall and/or Winter quarter.
